View RecordsChoose a record type first; then use the authority that owns that record.
Official public records do not live in one government “person finder” website. Use record-specific systems: PACER for federal cases, state/local agencies for their records, and archival/genealogy resources for historical research. A commercial people-search profile should not be treated as an official record source.
| What you know | Official channel | What it can help find | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal case clue | PACER Case Locator | Federal court case locations/numbers | Federal courts only |
| Historical/family clue | National Archives genealogy resources | Census, military, immigration, naturalization and other archival records | Not a current living-person locator |
| State/local record clue | State/local government agency | Agency-held public record | Custodian varies by record type |

PACER’s Case Locator can return party name, court, case number and filing/closing dates for federal cases.
Name alone is often ambiguous; add date, place, relationship, case/property clue.
Court, property, vital, business, archival or police/custody records have different custodians.
Do not merge records solely because names match.
Start with the strongest known name.
State/county/city can eliminate wrong matches.
